Preparing Your Spring Landscape
While winter isn’t quite over yet, Spring is just around the corner and now is the time to start planning your new landscape for 2011.
Clean Up
February looks like it will be nice in San Diego, sunny days and cold nights, but not freezing. Now is a good time to be cleaning out any old debris and pruning away dead branches that didn’t make it through the winter.
Turn your compost pile, repair or replace lawn furniture and start surveying your layout to determine what will go where for the upcoming BBQ’s. If window boxes need repainting, February is a great time to do that as well. Touch up the patio with new accents and conversational pieces. The stores have already set up their summer displays!
Now is also the time to prune any deciduous trees or shrubs, such as elms and maples. What is “deciduous”? It’s a tree or shrub that sheds its leaves in the fall. Evergreens for example, keep their leaves all year round.
Layout the Basics
Do you want a deck or pergola this year? Planning to install a new gazebo or outdoor seating area? These create great areas of partial or complete shade for entertaining or just enjoying your own backyard! We are a licensed contractor and can give you ideas and even build it for you. We can even show you a picture of what it will look like before any construction begins. Once spring arrives, you’ll likely be busy with planting - too busy to give your other outdoor projects your full attention. Plan now for the summer and you’ll be one step ahead.
In addition to new structures, think about worn pathways in your landscape that need stepping stones or a nice brick pathway. Waterfalls and other hardscape elements add that special touch that make the yard. First figure out what part of your yard you want to add this wow factor and how much you can spend, then give us a call and we can help you create it!
Order Up
Get your orders in for any seeds and bulbs that you’ll need this season. Many companies offer discounts, especially on large orders so once you’ve decided what you want to plant, go ahead and place your order. You’ll also find that the selection is much better now compared to what you’ll find in the coming months.
Fertilize
Around mid-month, you can start fertilizing your trees and shrubs. If the soil in your beds is workable use this time to turn under any cover crops and start tilling up your soil. Add fertilizer, compost or manure to enrich your soil and get it ready for planting.
